Borrowed the title off “Rockin Robin” by Bobbie Day. A hit single that was made more famous by the Jackson 5. Anyway, I am hardly the kind to jump too quickly into the social networking hoopla, if I must say. Today was an exception, the spur of the moment decision I made to sign up for a Twitter account under my pseudo, grafixfarm.
Two particular immediate reasons for this latest move. Firstly, I am a web designer and most people “tweet” why else would I not? Nah, just thought it would be fun to try it out but the real reason is that I am on holiday and have spent more time on getting my grafixfarm outfit out there and what better way then to expose my work on twitter. This blog has had a decent following until I slacked off on writing so I hope the Twitter account will keep people on this blog too.
Secondly, most “geeks” I know get information out quickly on Twitter. I recognize the potential of twitter to get the latest information quickly and it is fun to be kept up to date. If my twitter account were well known and followed, I would have reached massive numbers of people with the breaking news I had today. Today, the Solomon Islands government awarded its second mobile phone license to a little known consortium operating out of Papua New Guinea, bemobile. Of course, it has world renowned shareholders but it was hardly what the customers expected. Everyone had anticipated the announcement of Digicel. Regretably, at least for Digicel, it may have to hope that it finds another way to get into the Solomon Islands market. It is hardly big money but perhaps wounded pride would be a good way to describe how Digicel must be feeling right now. Anyway, had I been followed on Twitter, I could have gotten that news faster out. I relied on the traditional email, google chat and posting to a mailing list to get the news out and within minutes I had registered 8 hits for the story. Imagine if I had a well followed Twitter account. So thats why I am on Twitter. We will see how it goes.
Finally, I downloaded the appropriate WordPress plugin, installed it and activated it and there it is on the right column. My Tweets.
So right now I have a Twitter account on twitter.com/grafixfarm, a facebook account as Lif Haus and this blog. Perhaps its time I consolidated all these into one single standard account; perhaps just as grafixfarm.
