We know how to fish, now we don’t

Posted on December 18, 2008December 18, 2008 By Lynnold M Wini

Trash of GoldMalcom Pease is a name that does not sound familiar but I believe he does really know the answer to our needs.  He knows a thing or two about life that makes his simple idea “Einsteinique” in comparision to any solution one of our Solomon Islands politician will ever give you.  As the age old adage goes, “Give a man a fish; you have fed him for today. Teach a man to fish ; and you have fed him for a lifetime”; Mr Pease seem to be on the right approach to alleviating what the western world sees as dire poverty in the Solomon Islands.

Mr Pease has been “…instrumental in helping bring modern farm technology to the islands by assisting in the raising of funds for, and deployment of tractors to rural areas and copra plantations”.

It is not that handing out tractors to everyone who asks is the solution, it is simply the fact that Mr Pease recognizes that its not about the tractor – its the knowledge, the skill about repairing, maintaining and using the tractor that really matters.

Alas, as it is with fish; its neither the size nor type of fish that you catch which really matters; its how you caught it.
