There are striking similarities between Geneva, Switzerland and Honiara, Solomon Islands. And of course, the massive, gigantic differences that exist between the two cities. But on my thoughts on similarities, one that stands out most obviously is the simple fact that to appreciate the beauty of this magnificent country, you just need to drive out of Geneva.
My family and I have spent many wonderful hours on the road awed by the sheer beauty of this country. I suppose the best thing I have witnessed is how the landscape changes dramatically depending on what season we are in. The spectacular view from our apartment of a white, snow filled field in winter suddenly changes into a flower infestation – the green fields of sunflowers with grazing cows. We also see the first fields of wheat and now when summer is here, rolls of hay litter the fields.
The mountains are bare at this time of the year but very soon we will see the snows return to the mountain tops and edge their way ever so slowly down the hills until the snow flakes fall and winter returns in spectacular fashion again.
Nyon is a beautiful lakeside town with breathtaking scenary. In Nyon, I found a “fishing village” reminding me of our very own Fishing Village in Honiara. The smell of fish, the boats, the nets and the tin sheds are distinct reminders of the trade. A trade that has been the hallmark of my wantoks lives in Honiara.
Further along the lake is the city of Lausanne, home of the International Olympic Committee office and their museum. The city is bigger but like most Swiss cities they use the lake to their greatest advantage.
Green parks and the lake are distinct features of many Swiss cities. But enjoying the beauty of this great country lies in discovering the world that is not called Geneva!
I can’t wait to discover “Heidi country” when my family and I continue our Swiss adventure.
